Kind of works eligible for protection
The Copyright Society of Zanzibar (COSOZA) protects the literary, artistic and scientific works of an author or owner including books, computer programs, dramatic and musical works, choreographic works, audiovisual works, works of architecture, photographic works and many others provided under the Act.
Derivative works such as translations, transformation modifications of works, collection of works and collection of expressions of folklore shall also be protected as copyright works.
Membership Registration
An author or owner of a copyright is required to apply for membership of the Society to COSOZA before applying for the registration of his/her works.
Membership application can be done individually or groupwise by either locals or foreigners in a prescribed form.
Upon admission, members will receive a membership certificate and will be obligated to pay annual subscription fees.
Application for Registration
An application for registration of works shall be made in a prescribed form titled as Work Declaration Form and signed by the copyright owner or by an authorized agent.
Each application shall be for the registration of one work only, in instance where an applicant has more than one work, each work would require its own application form.
Examination
The Administrator shall cause search to be made among the registered works and pending applications, for the purposes of ascertaining whether there is any record or any dispute in respect of the same work applied for registration.
He is obligated to notify the applicant of his acceptance or refusal in writing. If he decides to reject the application, he may give reasons for such refusal.
Registration
The applicant shall communicate his acceptance to the conditions or object to the conditions given within one month from the date of notification by the Copyright Administrator.
Upon the registration of a work, the administrator shall acknowledge receipt of the application and material deposited if any.
Duration of protection
A registered work shall be protected during the lifetime
of the author and fifty years after his death. In case of a joint authorship works, the protection will be for the lifetime of the last surviving author and for fifty years after his death.
For collective, audiovisual and anonymous works the economic rights shall be protected for fifty years from the date the work was made available to the public.
